It’s what Ernie Kovacs was driving - when it oversteered into a pole and killed him.

While Nader’s book gets a lot of blame now - this was a very high profile accident and got the corvair lots of negative publicity. It’s believed he may have been trying to light a cigar at the time of the accident, so may not have been paying attention when the car skidded, but in any event the result was the death of a popular public figure in a car that had already been attacked for unsafe handling.

My question would be why a celebrity like Kovacs was driving a Corvair wagon? Sure it’s cool now, but back then it was an economy car. Maybe it was the same reason Harry Chapin was driving a Rabbit. Because he wanted to.

Was this taken in southwest Ohio/ did it have Ohio plates? Not too many of these exist and I saw one exactly like this at my grocery store last summer. I love them and did not know they were a thing prior to this

I don’t know anything about Kovacs’ personality off screen, but it may have just been a relatively inconspicuous ride for him.

I love Corvairs!  Saw a bunch of them at the Concor’s deLemons.  Though in MI, you see quite a few in every body style at car shows.  The vans are pretty neat too.
